From the President's Desk

Well the weather in the month of April has been unpredictable. We have had sunny warm days and snow or rain the next. This sequence happened several times throughout the month. Mother Nature cannot seem to make up her mind. The month of April brought the Great Lakes Timber Professionals Spring Celebration held at the Island Resort Casino in Harris Michigan.

GLTPA's Director's Notes

Greetings, A “Paradigm Shift” in the logging force seems to be taking place in the Lake States Region. It may be taking place in other parts of the country as well, but I have not had enough conversation with those outside this region to be certain of how broad this shift is. The shift is regarding the value placed on working long hours to produce wood and the lack of recognition, primarily monetary, for doing so.

G&G Lumber had its start like many sawmills across the Lake States. A backyard portable sawmill was purchased and as the lumber came off the saw, the sawmill bug put its teeth deeper into the owner. Jay Glime caught the sawmill bug due to the purchase of a Wood Mizer sawmill. Jay Glime grew up in Florence, Wisconsin. His father, Mike Glime, was a logger. In 1992, he was working for Champion Paper in Quinnessec, Michigan, the mill that is now owned by Verso.
